As a small nation, we do not have the luxury of aquifers or groundwater. We rely heavily on our four national taps — NEWater, Imported Water, Water from Local Catchment and Desalinated water. We consider water as a precious and scarce resource for Singapore.

Making the world a better place is not just the responsibility of the governments but companies as well. AsiaMalls has always shown a commitment to help the environment in its efforts to stop water wastage, and this is reflected evidently in our brand strategy, as well as our corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts in March this year.

Aligned to AsiaMalls’ brand mission of creating sustainable value partnerships and our core promise of incorporating sustainability into our malls and business processes, we partnered with Public Utilities Board (PUB), Singapore’s National Water Agency. We provided them with event spaces to host their key outreach campaign — Singapore World Water Day (SWWD) in the month of March, with water-related activities to encourage water conservation.

More than 45 Singapore World Water Day road shows took place islandwide and we are delighted to announce that three of our malls — Hougang Mall, Tiong Bahru Plaza and White Sands were involved in this initiation.

With the aim to raise awareness on water conservation as well as to encourage the public to pledge to save water, community volunteers gathered on the 15 March 2018 to 18 March 2018 at White Sands. Among those present at the road show were Team Nila, a national movement that promotes the culture of giving, citizen partnership and social cohesion through sport volunteerism. The event at White Sands gathered more than 100 volunteers, who shared the 5 water saving tips with the community.

To further drive this ongoing initiative, a booth was set up at Hougang Mall on 31 March 2018 and 1 April 2018 at level four, next to Manhattan Fish Market for shoppers to pledge to save water in exchange for a token. The public also had the chance to present their recent water bill showing a reduced consumption and they were able to walk away with a free gift! The month-long celebrations for Singapore World Water Day ended on a high note on the 1 April 2018 with a total of 75,000 “I Save” pledges collected, surpassing PUB’s previous target of 50,000 pledges by a massive 50%.

The grand finale SWWD road show held at Tiong Bahru Plaza on 31 March 2018 and 1 April 2018 drew a record crowd, many of whom rushed down to take the “I Save” pledge or to present their latest utilities bill. The public also learned how to save water via fun games, while radio DJs from Class 95, YES 933 and Aunty Lucy entertained the crowd with interesting on-stage games and quizzes to further spread the water conservation message.
